Shussaigama Pottery
Shussaigama Pottery is located in Izumo city, 10 minutes drive away from Izumo-shi station.
Shussai gama(klin) was founded in 1947 by 5 young men influenced by Mingei Folk-Art Movement.
These members were deeply inspired by Yanagi Sotetsu(the leader of Mingei Folk-Art Movement) and Bernard Leach(a famous English potter).
They named their workshop after the name of area"Shussai"
A large burning klin(Noborigama in Japanese)-climbing klin produces over 5,000 items per firing.
This firing takes place 3 or 4 times per year.
Today, about 10 potters including the children of founders work here.
Their hand-made ceramic ware represents simple and practical that fit everyday life.
Their trademark is deep blue color and widely loved all over Japan.
Next to the workshop, you can buy their products which are one of the most popular souvenirs in Shimane.
