There are only 12 original castles are remaining and 5 of which are designated as national treasure including Matsue castle.
This castle was built in 1611 by the founder of the Matsue domain Yoshiharu Horio.
There was the ordinance for Disposal of castles in 1873 and most of castles in Japan were destroyed.
However Matsue castle managed to be survived thanks to the hard working of local residents.
Inside the castle tower, lots of historical materials such as armors swords of samurais were exhibited.
Visitors also can enjoy the panoramic view from the castle tower.
Its grounds is also known as one of the best 100 cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan.
Taking a pleasure boat that goes along the castle moat is a recommended option.
You can enjoy strolling around the Shiomi Nawate street where former samurai residences and Lafcadio Hearn's former residence are around.
